“Try not! Do or do not, there is no try.”
A Modern DIY Home Improvement Blog
A famous philosopher once said “Try not! Do or do not, there is no try.” Those are bold words when you are not a Chip or Joanna Gaines and have limited home improvement knowledge. In this modern DIY home improvement blog, we hope that we can be an inspiration for those of you who want to do home improvement but may not have the confidence. We didn’t have the confidence either. But we are learning. While our house is a modern style house, some projects can be applied to any home and we hope that you can learn from our mistakes and our victory’s. Although we would love to do every project ourselves, some are too important and require an expert. We would love to hear from you. If you have ideas, tips, questions or you just have a modern house you want to talk about, please drop us a line.
We are the owners of a small modern home in East Tennessee. I am a web developer for a mortgage company and Suzanne is a tech for an eye doctor. I have always liked modern architecture and in my early days at college, I studied art and architecture before becoming a Computer Science major. Never thought I would buy a modern house, especially in East Tennessee. When I saw this house in the real estate listing, I showed it to Suzanne. She was like “Are you serious!, I don’t know about this.” We made an appointment and the rest is history. It wasn’t just the house that influenced our decision, it was the scenery, it was peaceful and we just loved it.
Let the fun begin
The house was perfectly fine as it was when we bought it. However, as time went on we just wanted to make it into the modern house we wanted it to be. Now, there were a few things that happened that made a few projects inevitable. The saddle around the parapet was not installed correctly, as a result, it caused some water damage to the siding around the top of the house. We could have easily replaced the saddle and the damaged siding and been done with it. But from my crazy perspective, it was an opportunity to make the exterior into what I had in mind.
I think I can
I come from a family of DIY’ers. My dad rarely hired anyone to do jobs around the house growing up. So, my thought is, I can do the same. That’s where the fun part comes in. Unfortunately, my skill and knowledge level with home improvement is not even close to my dad’s. I don’t have all the tools to do most of the projects. I know crazy right! That’s when I wrangle my dad and sometimes my brother-in-law in to help with the projects we have undertaken. So sit back and let the games begin.
